New World
by Amazon Game Studios
Status: In development, Alpha will be out “soon”

To be honest, this game is most probably not going to be released in 2019 but it’s definitely one of the upcoming games to watch in 2019. It seems that a few people from the games industry press have been invited to take a look at the alpha of the game but there is still no set release date. The official page states that alpha testing will begin soon (as of August 2018). The link below goes to the alpha test sign-up page.

Of course, this game is on everyone’s list right now since it is by one of the biggest companies in the world, Amazon. We all know that they have money to burn so top quality can be expected. New World will be a massively multiplayer sandbox game set in a fantasy version of 17th century world teeming with both mundane and supernatural dangers. Players will have to band together to claim territories and consolidate their power.

Escape from Tarkov
by Battlestate Games
Status: Closed beta (purchase needed to play)

A hardcore survival MMORPG, this game has no set release date but it’s still somewhat fair to include it in this list since it is a very promising title that already has a closed beta. Actually, the beta is more of an open one since anyone can now play it as long as they purchase a package.

What is Escape from Tarkov? It’s what we would get if Arma 3 and STALKER had a baby. It’s a survival shooter MMO with brutally hard gameplay and a game world economy. It’s mostly session-based small group battles with persistent gear. The developers plan to include a story-driven scenario-based walkthrough as well as solo and group raids.

Ascent: Infinite Realm
by Bluehole
Status: In development

Not gonna lie, the inclusion of Ascent: Infinite Realm (A:IR) is pretty iffy since there is no announced release date, nor is there any alpha or beta access. However, the official website has been released and people can sign up for updates.

The reason why this game is listed here is because there is tremendous interest this title and it’s definitely the top game to watch in 2019. That’s because it is being developed by Bluehole, the South Korean video game developer known for creating TERA and a newer game you have probably heard of: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). Despite the lack of concrete information about when it will be launched, all eyes are on Ascent: Infinite Realm.

Ascent: Infinite Realm is set in a steampunk fantasy world where machines and magic rule and people are dependent on air travel to explore and conquer. Players will take to the skies using airships, flying mounts, and miscellaneous vehicles to traverse A:IR’s massive open world. These flying vehicles and mounts are essential for one of the core game play mechanics: Realm vs Realm PvP mode.

Citadel: Forged with Fire
by Blue Isle
Status: Closed beta (purchase needed to play)

Citadel: Forged with Fire is a massive online sandbox RPG. Players can do whatever they want, including learning powerful spells, building gigantic castles, taming legendary beasts, form a house (guild) with other players, explore dungeons, and more.

The game is currently available to play on Steam and the price is pretty cheap at just $10. However, the game is still under development so keep that in mind. The servers are not 100% stable yet and there might be a few imbalances (such as wood being too expensive) in the game’s economy when you play. Or they might get fixed really fast by the devs. It’s basically a fun, new sandbox MMORPG that’s worth playing, especially since it’s going for cheap right now. It’s worth a try but only if you are okay with a somewhat unfinished game.

Mad World
by Jandisoft
Status: In development (2018 beta release date)

Now for something more casual! Mad World is an upcoming HTML5 cross-platform MMORPG for Windows, Android, IOS, OSX, Linux. Since it’s going to be available on HTML5, it will be playable on browsers and on mobile with no game client download needed.

It’s a classic MMORPG with a hand-drawn art style that will feature PvE, classless weapon-based combat, PvP arena mode, and giant boss raids. The devs have taken inspiration from the Cthulhu Mythos so the monsters will be unique, weird, and cool. Mad World looks super stylish and fun to play. As stated on their FAQ, the initial release date is “before the end of 2018” and they will probably have beta tests. Hopefully, the full game will be launched by 2019.

VRChat
by VRChat Inc
Status: Early Access free on Steam

VRChat is already up and working and you can play it for free on Steam… if you have VR gear, obviously. For years people have been asking what kind of MMORPG we can look forward to playing once VR becomes cheap enough for regular people to afford. Now we know! VRChat is still in its early stages and there are some hiccups but it’s a great virtual reality MMO where you can chat with other people.

Players can control customizable full body avatars with lip sync. Of course, tons of cool and cute hand gestures, emotes, and emoji are also available. Creative players can even build their own worlds with the Unity SDK. There are games and events, too. All in all, it’s a fun social experience.

ReEvolve
by Perfect World
Status: In development

Perfect World showed off its upcoming mobile sandbox MMORPG game ReEvolve at E3 2018. No release date was given but since they are already promoting it, and since mobile game development doesn’t seem to take as long as PC or console games, this could be released in 2019 or even late 2018.

The features list that Perfect World published states that ReEvolve will be the world’s first mobile sandbox MMORPG. Interesting! The game’s open-world setting will simulate aspects of the real world such as a day and night cycle, weather changes, random events, animal migration patterns, food chains, and so forth. Interaction with other players will be in real time. A core feature is crafting and research, including the crafting of necessities.
