INTRODUCTION TO CHICAGO POKER

Both Chicago Poker High and Chicago Poker Low are close relatives to Seven Card Stud Poker. Unlike Seven Card Stud, however, at showdown the pot is spilt between the best hand (high or low) and the player with the highest (in high) or lowest (in low) Spade hole card. This game is also called Follow the Queen.

ANTES

Each player places an ante to play. This is a small forced bet, typically 10% of the minimum bet.

THIRD STREET

After the ante, the dealers deals each player three cards. Two cards are dealt face-down and one face-up.

The player whose face-up card is the lowest starts the first round of betting by paying the bring in bet. A bring in bet is similar to an ante in that it is a forced bet and less than the minimum bet (half the minimum). The betting continues and passes to the left. Players must call the bring in or raise to the minimum bet. If someone raises, all players must call, raise, or fold.

FOURTH STREET

The dealer passes each player a single card face-up. Another round of betting begins, following the same rules and structure as the previous round. After Fourth Street, bets graduate to the maximum bet limit.

FIFTH STREET

Each player receives another face-up card from the dealer. Another round of betting ensues.

SIXTH STREET

Poker

Next, the players receive yet another face-up card. Betting begins again as usual. Remember, bets are now in the maximum betting range.

SEVENTH STREET

The dealers deals the last face-up card. Now, the last round of betting begins.

SHOWDOWN

All active players reveal their hands. The player who has the best hand, according to Poker Hand Rankings, wins half of the pot. The player who has the highest or lowest (depending on if you are playing Chicago High or Chicago Low) Spade as a hole card wins the other half. The hole cards are the two cards that were dealt face-down.

If a single player has both the best hand and the spade, they can either win the whole pot or the other half goes to the player with the second best spade.

Poker players, we are back to make you familiar with yet another poker variant. High Chicago and Low Chicago are two variants of poker which are similar to stud poker and other card games such as Caribbean Stud.

High Chicago Poker

It is believed that the card game was first played by a Russian mafia in an underground poker club in Stockholm, Sweden. Though High and Low Chicago are only played in selected casinos these days, the game is popularly played in Finland. Card game Chicago is played with a standard deck of 52 cards.

Both High and Low Chicago are played in the standard way where players are given 7 cards each. The only difference is that:

  • In High Chicago when the game is over the pot is split between the player who has the highest poker hand and the player who has the highest hole card of suit spade.
  • In Low Chicago, the pot is split between the player who has the highest poker hand and the lowest spade hole card. During a showdown, if no player has a spade card then the entire pot is awarded to the player who has the best poker hand.

Gameplay

The dealer deals three cards initially, two cards face down and one face up to all the players. The antes are placed and the player with the lowest face-up card begins betting.

Post this round of bets, the dealer deals each player one more card face up. The betting takes place again, but this time it is the player who has the best hand. This betting and dealing of cards go on till each player is dealt seven cards respectively. Among the seven cards, players are expected to make the best hand possible. Depending on the hand, the pot is split as per High Chicago or Low Chicago.
